The Brixton Riots in April 1981 were started
as a result of increasing social, political
and economic inequalities faced by the
African British community. There was also
on-going tension between the community
and the police. At the time of the riot,
London police were deploying a new strategy
called ‘Operation Swamp’ which
was allegedly aimed at reducing the number
of robberies but in reality, resulted
in many innocent African British men being
harassed and stopped by police without
a warrant. Over 300 people were injured
during the riots.
