On Friday 25th May 2012 the Abundance Centre was the site of an attempt by police and council officers to forcibly evict students and teachers from the centre situated on Peckham High Street. The proceedings were successfully halted after parents arrived and united in order to challenge the unjust process.
Since then the well loved community School of Unified Learning faces another court order stating the Councils intention to evict them on the 17th July 2012. This is despite the schools representatives having made numerous requests to their local councillors to come and visit the school in order to observe the positive work being done.
In a letter to council leader Eleanor Kelly from Astehmari Batekun, Executive member of Abundance, it is revealed that Southwark Council are seeking the charitable organisation pay regular business rates following a recent assessment of the lease.
It challenges the erroneously accusation that there is an “insistence that this tenancy should be on a rent-free basis” and explains that the voluntary group who are supported by a petition with several hundred signatories is merely seeking rate relief.
The voluntary community based school are currently been offered rates calculated on the same terms as local gambling institutions.
Show up at the show down
The Abundance centre is calling for;
“1. Attend our Centre on Tuesday 17th July 2012 @ 9am and stand in defence of the Centre. Bring the whole family and spread the word to all who you know benefit from the existence of Abundance. Lets show the power of our principles, command due respect and define a fair agreement.
2. Visit our blog and watch the video of our last defence of the Centre. If you have not seen it yet this will make clear the shameful way our local council has been dealing with us. At the blog please leave your comments, it is easy to post comments here and this will help others see how we have positively supported thousands of people in areas of education, health and social networking.
Your attendance is critical!
If you have to, take the day off work so that you and your family can be present. If you work for Southwark Council the shameful actions of your employer may make you sick, use the time to visit the local gp near our centre - don’t let Southwark Council corrupt your well-being. Our combined presence and self determination will show them up and thus we will win again in this 3rd show down. Beyond this date (or ideally before it) we are confident that agreements can be reached with the council as an institution, after all they are working for us, right? You did elect these “Councillors”, right?”
