Microsoft says no to European edition of Encarta Africana
By Ligali Media Network | Thu 2 June 2005
Jean-Philippe Courtois, CEO of Microsoft Europe says Microsoft will not produce or release a European version of its comprehensively detailed Encarta Africana interactive encyclopedia for British schools.
At the recent Africa 2015 conference hosted by the BBC in London, Courtois stated that he was committed to using Microsoft’s resources to help reduce the marginalisation of African people.
Ligali requested that Microsoft released a European version of Encarta Africana in order to assist in reversing the rising incidents of racial abuse against African people typically borne of ignorance and a lack of education. A European edition of Encarta Africana would have been a powerful resource to help provide all peoples in Europe with a comprehensive insight into African history and culture.
Microsoft stated it was unable to do so 'due to existing business and product plans'. It remains to be seen what commitments Microsfot will be making to reduce the marginalisation and stereotyping of African people in the West.
