Execution of an African American

This image of an unnamed African American facing execution at Sing Sing State Prison, New York was a common occurrence c1900. In the decades after ‘Emancipation’ the US criminal justice system was abused by Authorities as a means of social and population control of African American communities. In capital cases, African Americans were significantly more likely to receive the death penalty than any other ethnic group.
