Runaway African

This African man was captured in Louisiana 1863, having escaped from Union lines. The whip was deployed as the most common tool of ‘discipline’ to coerce African people into forced servitude. As a result, advertisements frequently described those disfigured by the scars of severe whipping as ‘runaway slaves’ or ‘undisciplined’.
