Mary Church Terrell
     

Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1863, Mary Church Terrell became the first African American woman appointed to the District of Columbia school board. From 1896 to 1901 she was the founding president of the National Association of Coloured Women (NACW). She remained a prominent activist in the struggle for civil rights and women’s equality till her passing in 1954.
