Police continue abuse of children under guise of terrorism

Officers from British police forces are continuing to abuse anti-terror legislation to harass innocent young African children through stop and search

Two metropolitan police officers are being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) following a complaint made by a 43 year old African man who was searched along with his 11 year old daughter and his neighbours 6 year old daughters.

Plain clothes officers seized the father’s mobile phones, USB sticks and a CD seized by the officers and was then instructed to stand in front of a CCTV camera in order to have his photograph taken.

The IPCC issued a statement explaining: “The complainant states that, when he asked under what legislation his property was being seized, he was told it was under section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000. He also complained that he was given no information as to when he could retrieve his goods or who to contact in order to do so, and that there was no communication from police despite assurances that he would be told when he could collect his things.”

Oval Assault: Innocent African children detained by armed police

History of unaccountable corrupt policing

This attack follows closely after the recent reporting of nine-year-old Jadan Shepherd who suffered similar abuse after being stopped and searched by police in Camberwell, south London, last month. In August 2008, over 180 innocent African children were held in custody and searched by police armed with machine guns at the Oval in London to the dismay of passerbys and parents.

Many have little confidence in the IPCC itself after a recent corruption scandal revealing the organisation ‘lost vital CCTV evidence’ whilst seeking to protect police officers in the murder of Sean Rigg was publicised in the national media.

In 2008, over 100 lawyers from The Police Action Lawyers Group (PALG), a nationwide coalition of lawyers representing members of the public who have lodged complaints against the police, resigned from the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) expressing “increasing dismay and disillusionment” at “the consistently poor quality of decision making at all levels of the IPCC”.

Earlier this year Claudia Webbe, chairperson of Operation Trident and a board member of London Crimestoppers wrote; “We should all be concerned that Sir Paul Stephenson, the new commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, is advocating the continued and widespread use of the historically failed tool of “stop and search”, which allows the police to act without the need for “reasonable grounds” as in Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act.

Claims by the police and other government agencies that stop and search is saving the lives of our young people are false.”
