Creative designer Jon Daniel’s exhibition showcasing his childhood through a collection of comics and toys depicting hero’s of the African Diaspora is a great success.

Afro Supa Hero is a snapshot of a childhood and journey to adulthood, shown through a personal collection of pop cultural heroes and heroines of the African diaspora. Jon Daniel’s action figures, comic books and games offer an insight into the experience of a boy with African Caribbean heritage growing up in 1960s and 1970s Britain, in search of his identity.

The exhibition explores how Jon Daniel found positive role models in the African Caribbean culture of his family and the African-American culture of the US.

Exhibits cover icons from Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Douglass to Michael Jackson Action figures depict both fictional and non-fictional heroes like Meteor Man, Muhammad Ali, Lieutenant Uhura, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. As well as popular heroes such as the Black Panther, comics also include less known characters such as Black Lightning, The Falcon, Black Goliath and a collector’s edition of Lobo.
